6. Business Manager
Cornellian Yearbook
The Cornellian Business Manager position provides a unique, hands-on learning experience managing the business side of Cornell University’s official yearbook. The Business Manager has profit/loss responsibility for the yearbook, and oversees a staff of approximately 40 student employees. The standard work commitment is approximately 15 – 20 hrs/week in the office during the school year and 40 hrs/wk during the summer. This is a paid position.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Marketing / Advertisement / Sales
- Create marketing material, including advertisement forms, book order forms and photo session postcards for mailing to parents and strategize to generate the most revenue and number of portraits taken.
- Create posters, quartercards, banners, and other signage on campus for photo sessions, staff recruitment, book sales, and other purposes as appropriate.
- Send mass e-mails through the Registrar and the Class Council listserv regarding photo sessions and book distribution.
- Target student organizations and corporations to generate advertisement revenue.
- Participate in events that will increase awareness of the Cornellian Yearbook.
- Create strategic plan distributing and selling yearbooks after publication.
Operations
- Ensure smooth execution of senior photo sessions.
- Retrieve old yearbooks from warehouse and ship them as they are sold.
- Regularly maintain website with updated dates, forms, pictures, and other appropriate information.
- Efficiently organize sales orders in database to ensure accurate records.
Maintain sound internal control.
Financial
- Work together with the President, CFO, and outgoing Business Manager to create a sound budget for upcoming fiscal year.
- Maintain fiscal responsibility by meeting or exceeding net budged income.
- Track accounts receivables and collect outstanding payments as appropriate.
- Provide updates and forecasts to the President.
Customer Service
- Return customer calls and e-mails in a timely, courteous, and helpful manner.
- Handle claims and complaints quickly and efficiently.
Human Resources
- Assist the Editors in Chief in editorial staff recruitment.
- Provide support as needed to Editors in Chief in order to ensure on-time completion of the yearbook.
Equipment
- Maintain and update inventory of computers, photography gear, and accessories as appropriate.
- Maintain internal control over photography equipment.
General Responsibilities

Contribute to the overall benefit of SAI by participating in meetings, team projects, and corporate recruiting, orientation, training, and by aiding other businesses as appropriate. Honor all deadlines and address all action plans delegated by the President and CEO of SAI, and report to them accordingly. Ensure a smooth transition for the business successor by maintaining accurate and detailed records of business transactions as well as the issues relating to and resolution of any problems that occurred during the manager’s tenure. Update the training manual to ensure its relevance for the incoming manager. Foster long-term business growth and development.
